Today the Commissioner-designate for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, faced his hearing from the European Parliament, where he answered questions from MEPs on the plans and positions he would take, if he was to be confirmed by the Parliament.
The hearing can be watched back here, and the full hearing schedule for all Commissioner-designates can be found here. Before the Commissioner-designates can take office, the full ‘College’ of Commissioners will be subject to a vote from the European Parliament, and this College could take office as early as December 2024.
On the Commissioner-designates remarks, SolarPower Europe has issued the following reaction.
Naomi Chevillard, Head of Regulatory Affairs at SolarPower Europe (she/her), said:
“Commissioner-designate Jørgensen’s hearing offered good encouragement to the solar sector.
Of course, we agree with his position that renewables are the clear way forward for a climate responsible and competitive Europe, which offers our citizens affordable energy prices.
Mr. Jørgensen is focussed on realising – not reopening – the 2030 climate and renewables targets.
In the first 100 days of the new Commission, they will present a plan to accelerate independence from Russian fossil fuels. To achieve this, we have the short-term solutions named by Jørgensen: renewables and grids, and they need to be delivered ‘on steroids’. This will be underpinned by system flexibility, which the Commissioner-designate rightly says is ‘about bringing down [energy] prices.’
Mr. Jørgensen was clear – we don’t need a fundamental change of electricity market rules, but proper implementation of current rules to bring the benefits renewables closer to the consumer, at the retail level through renewable PPAs, CfDs, and citizen empowerment. At the wholesale level, marginal pricing remains key to reinforcing investment signals for storage and renewables build out.”
