14 August 2024

On 25 July 2024, the RePower Ukraine Foundation officially inaugurated a hybrid solar and storage system at Brovary Regional Hospital in Ukraine.

The hybrid opening ceremony was attended by Igor Sapozhko, Mayor of Brovary; Tim Prange, Permanent Deputy Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine; Serhiy Dubrov, First Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Health Care of Ukraine; Jörg Ebel, Board Director of SolarPower Europe, and President of the German Solar Association (BSW); Eric Quiring, Director of Global Public Affairs at SMA Solar; and  Walburga Hemetsberger, SolarPower Europe CEO.

The hospital’s newly installed hybrid solar + storage system, consisting of a 24 kW solar power plant and 28.8 kWh energy storage system, will support a stable electricity supply for the hospital, which issues highly specialised medical care for over 187,000 people in the city of Brovary, as well as the surrounding community. Specifically, the newly installed solar and storage system is designed to provide a backup power supply for the hospital's intensive care unit.

Iryna Kosenko, Communications and PR Manager of the RePower Ukraine Foundation, said; "This is primarily about the energy independence of communities, the resilience of critical infrastructure, and ensuring medical services for residents, despite challenges with constant power outages. We are creating a model of supporting energy supply for hospitals that needs to be replicated in other medical facilities throughout Ukraine."

In a video message, Jörg Ebel, Board Director of SolarPower Europe, and President of the German Solar Association (BSW) said; "Today, it's a great honour for me as President of the German Solar Association, to welcome you all on the day when we are opening the new solar system, providing electricity and security. I am very grateful to cooperate with our dear partner – the RePower Ukraine Foundation, who made this day possible."

As part of our ‘Solar Supports Ukraine’ campaign, SolarPower Europe member SMA Solar donated all of the costs of the hybrid solar and storage system at the Brovary Regional Hospital. We set up the campaign with BSW to help install solar on schools and hospitals in Ukraine, tackling energy outages. The RePower Ukraine Foundation is also a partner in the campaign.

We are incredibly grateful for SMA Solar’s support, and for other pledged contributions.
