Rays of hope: Solar energy lights up Kharkiv Children's Hospital

19 July 2024

On 19 July 2024, the RePower Ukraine Foundation officially inaugurated a hybrid solar and storage system at Kharkiv Children’s Hospital.

The hybrid opening ceremony was attended by Ihor Terekhov, Kharkiv’s City Mayor; Vitalii Vlasiuk, Advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Health; and by Walburga Hemetsberger, SolarPower Europe CEO.

The hospital’s newly installed hybrid solar + storage system, consisting of a 30 kW solar power plant and 43 kWh energy storage system will guarantee that 250 children can receive crucial specialised healthcare services, including  palliative care.

Representatives of the RePower Ukraine Foundation said; "Our mission is to ensure energy independence for critically important infrastructure facilities, especially in frontline regions. Installing solar power plants in Kharkiv hospitals is not just a step towards energy autonomy, but an investment in Ukraine's future, which we envisage as green and sustainable."

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe said; “Today is a day of hope and progress, with the RePower Ukraine Foundation officially launching its solar system at Kharkiv’s Children’s Hospital…. With our ‘Solar Supports Ukraine’ campaign, we’re proud to be playing a role in ensuring that hospitals like those in Kharkiv can remain open, and essential services continue.”

As part of our ‘Solar Supports Ukraine’ campaign, the German Solar Industry Association (BSW), and SolarPower Europe supported the completion of the hybrid solar and storage project at the Kharkiv Children’s Hospital project. We set up the campaign with BSW to help install solar on schools and hospitals in Ukraine, tackling energy outages. The RePower Ukraine Foundation is also a partner in the campaign.

We are incredibly grateful for BSW’s support, and for other pledged contributions.

One notable donation came from the of children of Raasay Primary School in Raasay, a small Scottish island. The schoolchildren and wider community raised funds for the Kharkiv Children’s hospital project during a charity tea event.

If you would like to make a more sizeable corporate donation to Solar Supports Ukraine campaign, please get in touch with us, to help keep the lights on in Ukraine.
