Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been raging for over 10 months. With winter fast approaching, sustained support for Ukraine is more important than ever. As of August 2nd, 2022, more than 140,000 residential buildings in Ukraine have been destroyed. Over half of Ukrainian energy infrastructure and electricity production facilities have been damaged and destroyed as a result of Russian missile attacks.
Previously SolarPower Europe condemned the Russian war on Ukraine, and called on the solar community to mobilise support for the Ukrainian resistance.
The goal of the ‘Solar Supports Ukraine’ campaign is to collect €300,000 to finance the installation of solar for schools and hospitals, and solar off-grid trailers. Donations will be used by RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation to buy solar equipment which is urgently needed on site.
Our ambition is to support projects such as the below:
- Solar PV systems for 3 Ukrainian hospitals
- Mobile solar trailers for hospitals and municipalities on liberated territories
- Rebuilding Irpin school with solar
- Solar chargers, mobile batteries and powerbanks to help stay connected
Jörg Ebel, President of the German Solar Association (BSW) said: “In war, it is always the most vulnerable who suffer the most. This is why the German solar industry wanted to contribute to this campaign and kick off our ‘Solar Aid’ initiative so that we could equip schools with an improved electricity supply system. We appeal to our members and to energy industry stakeholders for more donations to this cause. Every contribution will go a long way.”
Artem Semenyshyn, CEO of the Solar Energy Association of Ukraine (ASEU) said: “The Ukrainian Solar Energy Association is proud to launch the ‘Solar Supports Ukraine’ campaign together with European solar industry associations. The campaign aims to provide solar energy benefits to people in need across Ukraine. Solar energy has a great potential for providing electricity and heat where the centralised supply is not possible due the war. Every solar kilowatt matters. The RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation is our key Ukrainian partner for the implementation of the project.”
Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, said: “SolarPower Europe are honoured to take part in this significant campaign. Ukrainian infrastructure has been decimated in this war and it has never been more important to support Ukrainians. With the ‘Solar Supports Ukraine,’ campaign, we are playing a small part in boosting solar but more importantly, in ensuring that schools and hospitals can function through a difficult winter period. Every small donation will make a huge difference.”
