Europe in Crisis

Let's get to work.

We are facing a time of multiple crises: the devastating Russian war in Ukraine has inflicted worries around energy security and skyrocketing energy prices as we head towards a challenging winter, and – to top it off – the looming threat of climate change continues to make its mark.

This is a watershed moment for Europe: we are in the midst of forging the continent’s new energy strategy and we cannot be idle.

Against this backdrop, SolarPower Europe together with European Aluminum, organised a rooftop event in Brussels to put the spotlight on how deploying more renewables can help us out of the energy crisis. At this event, we re-launched our Yes to 45% Renewables campaign, with an open letter to the Council of the EU, calling for a 45% renewable energy target in Europe for 2030 to help tackle energy bills and strengthen energy security.

During the rooftop event we heard a special video message from Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director General of DG-ENER, about the importance of committing to a 45% renewables target for achieving energy security and independence. Member of European Parliament, Hildegarde Bentele, spoke at the event about the role of raw materials in the energy transition and the need to have a sustainable, diversified supply chain. The tone has now been set for the months ahead and the agenda for this autumn is filling up fast. We will be publishing a number of reports including the latest version of our EU Solar Jobs Report with a webinar on 21st September (register to join here).  We look forward to the launch of new campaigns, such as the Clean Heat campaign which will be launched next week, and you can find more information about here

At the end of September, there are more events to look forward to. We will be taking part in a number of activities related to European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW). Make sure to join us for our session "Shaping the solar terawatt age: implementing the EU solar strategy" on 28 September.

In parallel, some of our team will be heading to Cape Town, South Africa for the Africa Renewables Investment Summit on 26-27 September that we are jointly organising with RenewAfrica, AFSIA and GWEC, supported by GETinvest.

We will be heading to Amsterdam on 6-7 October for RE-Source 2022 and on 27 October we will also host for the first time, Sustainable Solar Europe 2022 in collaboration with Intersolar - save the date and watch out for an opportunity to enter our sustainability photo competition!

There are major political milestones this autumn. Coming up first, the SolarPower Europe policy team will be making their way to Strasbourg next week during the plenary. The European Parliament will vote on the Renewable Energy Directive amendment for permitting on 12th September 2022 and on the 45% renewables target on the 13th September.

Make sure you keep up to date on all of our activities on social media and on our website
