Crucially, storage is a solution to the urgent need, as highlighted in REPowerEU, to replace natural gas in its flexibility and baseload role in the short (2023) and medium (2025) term. A rapid deployment of renewable sources coupled with storage will decrease Europe’s fossil fuel dependence and increase the efficiency of its energy system, including through the reduction of energy price volatility.
Decarbonising the power sector is the first action to take in order to enable a smooth transition of the energy system. The electrification of the heating and transport sectors will be more effective if green electricity is used. It is critical to deploy technologies that allow for an efficient use of renewable electricity at any time.
With this White Paper, SolarPower Europe, representing the entire solar energy value chain, offers a contribution to the discourse around the EU action needed to achieve its ambitious Green Deal agenda and address the ongoing energy crisis. This White Paper focuses on the storage needs in the EU electricity sector and the solutions that support variable renewable energy deployment and European energy security.
