Polysilicon is strategically important for the energy transition

Industry Letter

30 October 2023

SolarPower Europe writes to representatives from the Council of the EU and the European Commission to ask for their support in including polysilicon on the EU critical raw materials list.

Considering the complex geopolitical landscape, SolarPower Europe calls for support for the parliamentary amendment proposal regarding the revision and regular update of the list of strategic raw materials outlined in Article 3.3, with a proposed frequency of every two years.

In this context, we take the opportunity to highlight the strategic importance of polysilicon for the solar PV industry within the energy transition, and strongly advocate for its inclusion in the assessment of Critical Raw Materials list going forward, ensuring its regular monitoring and stress testing by the European Commission.

This is important given the central role of solar PV in Europe’s energy transition and economic prosperity. Solar PV saw a record 41GW of new installations in the EU last year and is projected to grow further to 100GW newly installed capacity as soon as 2027. At this projected pace, solar PV is set to become the main source of the EU's electricity generation already before 2030.
