SolarPower Europe brings the sun to Brussels!

13 September 2024

Brussels does have sun! Yes, you heard it right – SolarPower Europe brought the sun to the European Parliament in Brussels from 9-12 September, to offer a bright welcome to new and returning Members of Parliament (MEPs) and Parliamentary staff.

No other technology will have such a profound impact on the lives of Europeans as solar energy – poised to become the leading energy source in Europe by 2030. Affordable, clean, secure – today solar produces enough energy in Europe to power the equivalent of 80 million EU households.

Throughout the week, the SolarPower Europe team doubled up as sunrays, extending the warmth of the sun to anyone and everyone passing by the European Parliament. With our solar quiz, we tested your solar knowledge and spread the word about the work we do to ensure solar power is Europe’s leading energy source by 2030.

We were delighted to welcome MEP Sean Kelly to our installation for a discussion about the potential of agrisolar in Europe. Technologies like Agri-PV host an array of benefits such as increasing crop yield, reducing water usage and providing additional revenues for farmers. To end, we enjoyed some solar-powered apple juice together – produced by an Agri-PV farm in Germany.

Stay tuned for the full conversation coming soon!

Exchanges throughout the week also covered grids and flexibility. It was great to be joined by our members, Torsten Knop, E.ON and Chair of our Grids and Flexibility Workstream, and Francisco Beirão, Lightsource bp to welcome MEP Nicolas Gonzales Casares to our sun.

On Thursday, SolarPower Europe were delighted to facilitate a discussion between newly elected MEP Benadetta Scuderi and representatives from Energy Cities and Fedarene about the solar skills challenge (and opportunities), and priorities for the new political cycle to ensure that the EU Green Deal is implemented at a local level.

Ending the week, our CEO Walburga Hemetsberger was joined by former MEP and Energy Minister for Luxembourg, Claude Turmes.

The sunlight also stretched across Brussels’ European Quarter, reaching Schuman metro station – did you spot our message?
