SolarPower Europe attends Tesla Terhills Battery Park opening in Belgium

By: James Watson, CEO

On 14 May, our CEO, James Watson, joined Board member Marcus Mueller for the inauguration of Tesla's new 18MW battery park in Terhills, Belgium. On a beautiful solar day, Bart Tommelein, Vice-Minister-President of the Government of Flanders and Flemish Minister for Budget, Finance and Energy, praised the opening of the new battery park in a former mining area. There will be a solar array and a floating solar array added to the site and a new tourist village developed that will be powered on a micro-grid from the solar and storage facility.

The 18 MW array is already providing balancing services to the grid and was built in just 5 weeks. This signals the reality of the speed with which storage can be built and deployed into the grid and how quickly a renewable baseload can become a norm for Europe. The speed of the completion of the project is nothing compared to the speed with which the battery park can react to demand requirements in the Belgian grid. Evan Rice, Director Energy Europe & Africa Tesla, explained that the battery array is 100x faster than traditional energy sources in responding to the grid. This is a great example of how digital solar and storage will ultimately re-make the way we view power in the next few years.
