Consumer Empowerment

The current energy transition is consumer-driven and solar power provides a concrete solution for it to succeed.

With the dramatic cost decrease of solar, European households and businesses can control their energy bills by producing their own energy. Self-consumption protects consumers against volatile energy prices; it increases retail competition and helps new business models to emerge; and it drives demand-side flexibility, for the benefit of network operators.

Because we believe that consumers can and should become active players of the energy transition, SolarPower Europe has started a dialogue with consumers organisations, demand-side flexibility providers and citizens initiatives to explore how to make solar accessible to all.

What we do to empower consumers:

  • We have made concrete proposals  on how national schemes should promote self-consumption, and how the European Commission can steer this development;
  • We make sure distributed generation is visible in the European debate, via regular events and workshops.
